Dholera International Airport Is Going To Connect Gujarat To The World
Gujarat is building Dholera International Airport to become the largest airport in the state. Currently, the busiest airport in Gujarat is the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel airport at Ahmedabad.
While the land trapped Ahmedabad Airport is already running at full capacity. The excess traffic will now be handled by building a second airport for Ahmedabad at Dholera.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) oversees nine of Gujarat’s airports in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Deesa, Surat, Kandla, Porbandar, and Keshod. Once Dholera International Airport is operational, it will become a hub connecting smaller domestic flights in the Saurashtra region globally via Dholera.
Connectivity for Dholera International Airport
The Dholera international airport will not only serve as an alternate airport to Ahmedabad but also connect 7 other small cities with Domestic Airports to the World.
A new greenfield industrial smart city is being built at Dholera. While the airport will allow passengers to travel quickly to Dholera, the airport will also act as a cargo airport for industries in Dholera.
Dholera International Airport will be a MRO airport
Maintenance Repair and Overhaul airport. These are airports where aircrafts go for their maintanance and repairs. While India has a total of 486 airports, it has only 8 MRO airports.
Damaged Indian planes that need repairs would have to go to foreign MRO airports. Which would lead to India paying a lot of money to countries like Singapore, Sri Lanka, etc for regular aircraft repair
If India builds MRO in India, we won’t need to go abroad for their maintenance. This would lead to a huge saving for India and would also create tons of new high paying jobs in India.
Advantages of building Dholera International Airport
- The airport will handle additional traffic from surrounding cities such as Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Nadiad, and Anand.
- This will accelerate an airport-led economic growth throughout the state, creating new higher paying skilled jobs.
- The MRO airport in Dholera will bring in domestic Indian flights for regular repairs.
Dholera International Airport will be constructed in 2 stages.
- Phase-1 will be a 3,200-meter-long runway, that will be suitable for type 4E aircraft
- Phase-2 the runway might be extended to 3,800 meters
The first phase of the airport is expected to be completed and operational by 2024. Building an International Airport will allow for all the smaller domestic airports to connect to the world. Making Gujarat a truly global hub for business.
